Barack the Vote!

February 3, 2008 by Dianne Que

Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice…America’s stupid.

After 7 long Bushie years, we know two things for sure: retarded cowboys shouldn’t be president (especially not twice), and we want someone different.

Finally, the time has come.

On Tuesday, February 5, 2008, 22 states will hold Democratic primaries and caucuses, a day known as “Super Tuesday,” “Super Duper Tuesday,” “Giga Tuesday,” or my personal favorite, “Tsunami Tuesday” (a tad insensitive don’t you think?).

Unfortunately, many young folks don’t follow the campaign trail, don’t keep up with issues, or tune out politics completely. I don’t blame ‘em…err..us. The blase attitude among young voters has stemmed from inaccessibility, gridlock, and bureaucracy…the status quo… in Washington. We’ve been unduly robbed of the idealism we’re entitled to have. The common response to, “Who are you voting for?,” is, “I don’t care who it is, I just want to see a change.”

We’re on the brink of that change.

The democratic race is between, dare I say it, a black man and a woman. Wowzers. So, unless Middle America decides to elect another white, geriatric, republican oil-monger, we should experience a step up from retarded cowboy-esque politics.

Enter Barack Obama.

If there’s any candidate that represents the change we’re looking for, it’s this guy. His unifying vision, ability to inspire, and audacity for hope are what this country needs at such a broken and pivotal moment in history. Moreso, he has reached out to young voters in a feel-good campaign that strives to heal the serial disasters of the last administration and restore our idealism.

Pundits criticize his lack of experience. Obama’s response:

“The truth is, you can have the right kind of experience and the wrong kind of experience. Mine is rooted in the real lives of real people and it will bring real results if we have the courage to change. I believe deeply in those words. But they are not mine. They were Bill Clinton’s in 1992, when Washington insiders questioned his readiness to lead.”

No candidate is perfect, but Obama taps into our desperate need to carry this country forward, not through anything he’s done, but through what he represents – I’m down with that.
